A recent study found that deteriorating pavement and overcrowded roadways are costing local drivers thousands of dollars a year.
The study, done by national transportation research TRIP, found that the average driver in Sacramento spends $2,166 annually "in the form of additional vehicle costs as a result of driving on rough roads. the cost of lost time and wasted fuel due to congestion, and the financial cost of traffic crashes."
It went on to say that 70 percent of all major roads and freeways in the Sacramento-area are in poor or mediocre condition due to lack of state and local funding.
Researchers found that overall, California drivers lose a total of $61 billion every year as a result of driving on deficient roads.
